Checking Keyboard and Encoding Selecting Within an Application

There are times you may want to check your current keyboard and character set settings while you are composing Tamil text in an application. You may want to do this without having to right click on the minimised Anjal icon or pull down the +Murasu menu.

To check your current keyboard and encoding (character set) settings from within the application, hold the Ctrl and Shift key down together and press the "~" key (typically before the "1" key on the left). This will pop up a status window to indicate your settings.

If you are running Anjal2000-Pro, you can check this status from any application. Lite users will be able to check it with Lite supported applications, namely Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape (Composer, Navigator and Messenger), Internet Explorer, Notepad, Murasu Editor, Murasu Mailer and Acrobat Reader.

This is also another way of checking if Murasu Anjal is functioning well in your computer.

Checking the Encoding of Tamil Text

Sometimes you may see text that appears gibberish (i.e. all kinds of characters that you do not understand). At times like this, the question that typically comes to your mind is "what font should I set the text to?". Murasu Anjal can help you understand this.

If you are seeing this in an Anjal supported application, you may do the following :

  1. Select a portion of the text. Select a few lines. The more text
you select the more accurate the results will be.
  2. While the text is selected, pull down the +Murasu menu and pick
    "Check Selection" item.
  3. Anjal2000 will examine the text and tell you what encoding the
    selected text is in.

Anjal2000 will automatically recognise text if it is in a known encoding, such as TSCII, TAB, Anjal or Unicode. Once you know the encoding, you can set the font accordingly :

  • TSCII - choose any font that ends with "TSC" (like InaiMathiTSC)
  • TAB - choose any font that starts with "TAB" (like TAB_InaiMathi)
  • Anjal - choose InaiMathi, InaiKathir, ArulMathi - or any other font
that starts with "An_" (like An_Mullai)
  • Unicode - choose any Unicode Tamil font (such as AnInaiMathi_Unicode)

If you are using an application that does not have the +Murasu menu, cut and paste the text into Notepad and perform the above actions. Outlook Express users can find the +Murasu Menu in the system menu (please check the previous newsletter for details).

Creating PDF Documents with Anjal Fonts

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a very popular format for exchanging documents. There are PDF readers (Like Adobe Acrobat Reader ) for most of the operating systems and hence a document prepared in PDF format can be viewed practically on any computer. Fonts can also be embedded into these documents making this a very convenient way of sending documents where
the the recipient is not likely to have the appropriate fonts on his computer.

Creating PDF documents with Anjal fonts is as easy as creating a PDF document with any font. If you are an AnjalPro user, you may create PDF documents with all the professional quality fonts in Anjal2000-Pro. If you have Murasu Font Pack 1, you'll have more fonts to play with.

In order to create PDF documents, you will need Adobe Acrobat from Adobe Systems. Visit http://www.adobe.com for details on how you can purchase a copy of this software and create documents in PDF format.

Tamil Internet 2001, Kuala Lumpur - Unicode to be the future standard for Tamil

Tamil Internet 2001 conference held in Kuala Lumpur from 26th August to 28th August 2001 resolved that Unicode will be the future standard for Tamil and efforts should be made to facilitate the transition from the existing 8-bit encoding to Unicode.  Please see the KL Communiqué at http://www.tamilinternet.org or http://www.infitt.org

Anjal 2000 was one of the earliest Tamil software to provide Unicode support. If you are running a Unicode compliant OS like Windows 2000 or Windows XP and have the Indic Language Pack installed,  you can use Anjal to create your Tamil documents in Unicode. Anjal enhances the Unicode functionality available in these Operating Systems by providing more fonts and the familiar Anjal keyboard layout even when you are generating documents in Unicode.

You can download the Unicode font pack from the files section of Anjal group at http://groups.yahoo.com/files/anjal (Note that you must be a member of this group - membership is free).

We have a special group on yahoo to support use of unicode in Anjal. Please visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/anjal-unicode to subscribe
