3. Ability to send and receive SMS messages in Tamil. Green Category

Once you have setup GPRS on your phone, you may download AnjalTest from http://www.murasu.com/mobile/test.wml.  Please check with your phone vendor or mobile operator on how to activate GPRS on your phones.  Note that data charges (though minimal) may apply for GPRS access. There is no charge for AnjalTest.

MIDP Specifications

MIDP is an abbreviation for Mobile Internet Device Profile.  It a specification that describes the required features in a mobile phone that includes Java technology.  Two versions of the profile exist today, 1.0 and 2.0.  The older phones (first generation Java phones) comply to MIDP 1.0 specification while most of the new ones are MIDP 2.0.   AnjalMobile requires MIDP 2.0 phones to send and receive SMS messages in Tamil.  The older Java phones can still be used to compose and send email messages in Tamil (requires GPRS to be activated).  Some of the older ones also include the capabilities the make Tamil chat possible.

Note that phones that do not include Java cannot run AnjalTest or AnjalMobile.

Early Models with Java
(MIDP 1.0)

Test results will vary from phone to phone. The phone on the left is an old model - one of the early phones with Java technology. You can compose and send email messages in Tamil but not Tamil SMS

The phone on the right has an additional capability. You can chat with another person in Tamil - provided he/she also has AnjalMobile.

For Tamil SMS Chat to work, both chat parties must be running AnjalMobile on their phones while chatting.

New Models with Java
(MIDP 2.0)

The pictures below show selected MIDP 2.0 phones.  These phones will be able to run the entire AnjalMobile suite: AnjalEmail, AnjalChat and AnjalSMS.
