This is a simple
guide to help you setup and use Murasu Mailer version 3.0
This
version of Murasu Mailer requires Murasu Anjal2000 Second Edition. Current
users of Anjal2000 may want to look at the
Anjal2000 Second Edition page to find out what is new in Anjal2000-SE.
This document will be constantly updated.

Other Quick Start
Guides |
| It
is our attempt to provide you with a Quick Start Guide (QSG) for
every tool that we develop. We have written these guides to help you
get started with these tools by providing you just enough
information in the simplest possible way.
These guides are available at:

1. What is
Murasu Mailer? |
|
Murasu Mailer is a tool that
can help you send quick email messages in English and Tamil without
invoking a sophisticated email system. It is by no means a replacement for
popular tools like Netscape Messenger, Outlook Express or Eudora.
For a complete email environment, we suggest that you use either of these
tools. You may compose Tamil messages directly in these tools with the
help of Murasu Anjal2000. Details on how you can configure these tools can
be found in the Murasu Anjal
Quick Start guide. Quick Start Guides are at http://www.murasu.com/help/quickstart.
To use Murasu Mailer, you
must have a direct Internet connection. You may use this if you are
dialing up to the Internet from your home or your computer is connected to
the Internet without a firewall in between.
If you do not have a
direct connection, you may specify some settings in the Mailer with the
help of your systems or network administrator. Setup details are provided
in the section below.

2. Murasu Mailer
Setup |
|
The figure below shows the
setup screen of Murasu Mailer. You may fill in your name in English
and Tamil and your email address.
|
|
|
You may leave the Port
number blank.
If you want to get a copy of every
email you send, put a tick on "Always send me a copy". This is
highly recommended as the Mailer does not keep copies of outgoing
emails.
SMTP Server
This is the email sever (a computer that
provides email delivery services) that Murasu Mailer will connect to in
order to deliver your messages. If you are directly connected to the
Internet (that is, you are dialing to your Internet Service Provider from
home, or connected to a network that does not have a firewall), you may
leave this blank. Murasu Mailer will use a server of its own to send the
message.
If you do know the name of your SMTP server,
it is highly recommended that you enter the full name of your SMTP server
here. Using an SMTP server closer to your computer will certainly improve
the delivery time of your message from your computer.
Corporate Networks and Firewalls
If you are in a network that is inside a
firewall, Murasu Mailer will not be able to contact its own email server
(i.e. SMTP server). Therefore, you must provide the SMTP server name that
is used in your network. The server names are very specific. You may check
with your systems or network administrators to get the SMTP server name.
Sometimes, you may also need to specify a
different port number. Although this is not usually the case, it is best
to check with your administrator on the settings.
After Sending
There are three things you can ask Murasu
Mailer to do after it has sent your message.
Do Nothing
Pop up a message
Close the Mailer
Click on the entry and select the
appropriate action.

3. Sending Emails with Murasu Mailer |
To
send emails, fill in the email address of the recipients in the "To"
section. You may also add addresses in the "Cc" and "Bcc"
sections. Your message will be sent to all the email addresses in To, Cc
and Bcc. The addresses in the Bcc (called Blind Cc) section will not be
shown in the message delivered. In other words, the recipients will
not know whom you have included in the Bcc list.
You may type the Subject
of your message in English or Tamil. Not all email servers on the Internet
will be able to pass Tamil characters in the subject line. Therefore,
Murasu Mailer will "Romanise" the Tamil words to contain only plain
ASCII characters for safe delivery of your message.
The content of your message can be in
Tamil and/or English. The Mailer will deliver the text without any changes.

4. Typing Tamil Messages |
|
As mentioned earlier, you may compose your messages in Tamil and
English. Use the F12 key to switch between the two languages. You may
use any keyboard that is available in Anjal. For a detailed guide on
typing in Tamil with the Anjal keyboard, please refer to the Murasu Anjal2000 Quick
Start Guide.
Murasu Mailer will
set the font in the message section automatically based on the
"Character Set" you have set in your Murasu Anjal setup. The fonts
used are shown in the table below.

Which
Character Set? |
|
The most
commonly used character set for email exchanges in Tamil is
TSCII. TAB is also used by some. If you are a member of a
mailing list (such as those in Yahoo groups), you will most
likely be using TSCII.
Note that
your recipients must be also using the same character set in
order to read your Tamil messages in tact. |

5. Converting Text |
|
When a message is composed in a certain
character set and is viewed with a different character set, we will see
meaningless sequence of characters. For example, if the text is in TSCII
and if we are viewing with the TAB_InaiMathi font, or vice-versa, we will
not see the text correctly.
Fortunately, Murasu Anjal provides a way to convert these text from one
format to another. To do this, you must first decide which format you want
your text in. Let's take for example you want your text in TSCII format.
Checking the format
If your text does not appear correctly in the Mailer, you can check which
format your text is in. Select a portion of the text (the more you select
the more accurate the results). While the text is selected, pull down the
"+Murasu" menu and select "Check Encoding". Murasu Anjal will check the
text and display a message stating the format the message is in. If
it says that the text is in TSCII, and you are not seeing it correctly,
then you should set your encoding to TSCII.
Check the bottom right corner of your Mailer Window. The character set you
have chosen will be displayed. If it's not TSCII, pull down the "+Murasu"
menu again, select "Set Encoding" and pick "TSCII 1.7 Tamil". This
will set the font to TSCu_InaiMathi and your Tamil text will appear as it
should.
Converting the Text
Let's assume that in the
example above, the text was checked and found to be in TAB. If you want to
retain the text in TAB and view it correctly, see that your encoding is
set to TAB as well (see the 'Checking the format' paragraph above).
However, if you want to convert the text that is in TAB to TSCII, select
the entire text first; pull down the "+Murasu" menu; select "Convert
Selection" and pick "To TSCII 1.7".
This will convert the entire text to TSCII format. Just ensure that you
have also set the encoding to TSCII to read the converted text.
Other formats
Murasu Mailer will work with Murasu Anjal to automatically detect and
convert Tamil text that are in Anjal, TSCII, TAB, Murasu, Vikatan, Lippi
and Kanian formats. You may use the steps above to convert from these
formats. However, the font will only be set by the mailer for the formats
listed in Section 4. (Note that we have used "format" and "encoding"
interchangeably. For our purpose, we can assume both these words to mean
the same).
If you have text in other formats, they can also be converted with the
help of Murasu Anjal. It requires an additional step and these actions can
be performed through the "+Murasu" menu. You may want to refer to the user
guides on Murasu Anjal2000 and the "+Murasu" menu. These documents are
listed in the Quick Start
Guides page in Murasu.Com.
