Murasu
Insert-Text Editor
3.0
Quick Start Guide |
| |
Last updated: 06 March 2002 |

|
This is a simple
guide to help you setup and use Murasu Insert-Text Editor (called iEdit) version 3.0.
This
version of iEdit requires Murasu Anjal2000 Second Edition. Current
users of Anjal2000 may want to look at the
Anjal2000 Second Edition page to find out what is new in Anjal2000-SE.
iEdit is a "Plug-In" for Murasu Anjal. It will be included in the setup if
you had downloaded and installed "Murasu Anjal2000 and Plug-Ins" package.
It will also be included if you had installed Anjal2000 from the CD-ROM.
If you do not have the Plug-Ins installed, you may want to download the
package from the Murasu Download Center at
http://www.murasu.com/downloads.
This document will be constantly updated.

is our attempt to provide you with a Quick Start Guide (QSG) for
every tool that we develop. We have written these guides to help you
get started with these tools by providing you just enough
information in the simplest possible way.

1. What is
Murasu Insert-Text? |
|
Insert
text is a feature of Murasu Anjal2000 that allows you to insert commonly used
lines or paragraphs quickly into your documents or email messages. Each of
these lines or paragraphs can be given a name and retrieved through the
"+Murasu" menu. The figure below shows three items in the Murasu
Inset-Text menu. These items can be
edited with iEdit, and more items can be added with the Murasu Insert-Text
Editor. Insert-text can be in English or Tamil.

The "+Murasu" Menu can also
be invoked from the applications System menu. For more details on the,
read the Quick Start Guide on the Murasu menu. The example below shows the
menu is Microsoft Front Page:

2. Creating Insert-Text |
|
The figure below shows the
Insert-Text Editor. The editor can be started by selecting the "Edit"
item, which is the first item, in the Insert-Text menu. It can also be
started from the minimised Murasu Anjal icon in the bottom right hand
corner of your screen. Place the mouse cursor on the icon; click the right
button and select "Insert Text Editor".
|
|
|
The editor is very easy to use. There are 4 buttons on the top panel New Item, Delete Item,
Save, Help.
Click on New Item to add an item
called "New Item" to the list. When you select this item, the same
name will appear in the Title edit box on the top panel. You can
edit the Title so that it has relevance to the text that you will be inserting. The
title can be in Tamil. However, you may not see it in Tamil when it is added to
the "+Murasu" menu. In the case above, the third item (thodarpu mukavari) is in
Tamil. You may not see this item in Tamil in your +Murasu menu later on. For
this reason, it may be best to leave the titles in English or use Romanised
Tamil. Using the editor on the right of
the list, type the text you want inserted. Here you may have English
and Tamil text. Keep adding as many items as you
want. The maximum number allowed is 99.
Once you have completed your list,
click on the diskette icon to save your work.
While editing, you may use the cross
icon to delete an entry in the list. Note that deleting an
entry in the list will delete the text associated with it as well. When you
click on the delete icon, the item will be marked for deletion. All entries that
are marked will be deleted from the list when you save your work. Back

3. Activating New Menu Entries |
Once you have edited and saved your work as
outlined in section 2, Murasu Anjal will add your new entries to the
+Murasu menu. If you had started an application "before" you edited the
menu entries (for example Notepad or MS Word), just quit and restart that
application. You need not quit and restart Murasu Anjal.

4. Typing Tamil Text |
|
As mentioned earlier, your insert-text can be in Tamil and
English. Use the F12 key to switch between the two languages. You may
use any keyboard that is available in Anjal. For a detailed guide on
typing in Tamil with the Anjal keyboard, please refer to the Murasu Anjal2000 Quick
Start Guide.
Insert-Text editor
will set the font in the message section automatically based on the
"Character Set" you have set in your Murasu Anjal setup. The fonts
used are shown in the table below.

Which
Character Set? |
|
The most
commonly used character set for email exchanges and Web
pages in Tamil is TSCII. TAB is also used by some. If you are a member of a
mailing list (such as those in Yahoo groups), you will most
likely be using TSCII.

5. Converting Text |
|
When a paragraph is composed in a certain
character set and is viewed with a different character set, we will see
meaningless sequence of characters. For example, if the text is in TSCII
and if we are viewing with the TAB_InaiMathi font, or vice-versa, we will
not see the text correctly.
Fortunately, Murasu Anjal provides a way to convert these text from one
format to another. To do this, you must first decide which format you want
your text in. Let's take for example you want your text in TSCII format.
Checking the format
If your text does not appear correctly in iEdit, you can check which
format your text is in. Select a portion of the text (the more you select
the more accurate the results). While the text is selected, pull down the
"+Murasu" menu and select "Check Encoding". Murasu Anjal will check the
text and display a message stating the format the message is in. If
it says that the text is in TSCII, and you are not seeing it correctly,
then you should set your encoding to TSCII.
Check the bottom right corner of your iEdit Window. The character set you
have chosen will be displayed. If it's not TSCII, pull down the "+Murasu"
menu again, select "Set Encoding" and pick "TSCII 1.7 Tamil". This
will set the font to TSCu_InaiMathi and your Tamil text will appear as it
should.
Converting the Text
Let's assume that in the
example above, the text was checked and found to be in TAB. If you want to
retain the text in TAB and view it correctly, see that your encoding is
set to TAB as well (see the 'Checking the format' paragraph above).
However, if you want to convert the text that is in TAB to TSCII, select
the entire text first; pull down the "+Murasu" menu; select "Convert
Selection" and pick "To TSCII 1.7".
This will convert the entire text to TSCII format. Just ensure that you
have also set the encoding to TSCII to read the converted text.
Other formats
iEdit will work with Murasu Anjal to automatically detect and
convert Tamil text that are in Anjal, TSCII, TAB, Murasu, Vikatan, Lippi
and Kanian formats. You may use the steps above to convert from these
formats. However, the font will only be set by iEdit for the formats
listed in Section 4. (Note that we have used "format" and "encoding"
interchangeably. For our purpose, we can assume both these words to mean
the same).
If you have text in other formats, they can also be converted with the
help of Murasu Anjal. It requires an additional step and these actions can
be performed through the "+Murasu" menu. You may want to refer to the user
guides on Murasu Anjal2000 and the "+Murasu" menu. These documents are
listed in the Quick Start
Guides page in Murasu.Com.
