| Internet
chat is currently the most popular mode of instant communication
among individuals and groups. Although it is not possible to exchange voice and video
over these chat sessions, text chat appears to be the most
efficient, especially when we do not have a high-bandwidth (fast)
connection to the Internet. |
In this
page, we will discuss ways to chat in Tamil. We will again look at
two of the most commonly used chat environments:
Yahoo Messenger and
MSN Messenger.
We will also discuss about
Using Tamil in Chat
Rooms and
The Murasu Menu in Messengers. |
Note: |
| To
be able to type Tamil in Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger, you
must be running Anjal2000-Pro. Click
here to get details on Anjal2000-Pro. |
| We will
assume that you have installed and setup these tools in your
computer and are able to chat in English. We will only look at the settings you will need to do in
order to chat in Tamil. |
| Tamil
in Yahoo! Messenger |
To
configure Yahoo Messenger, click on the Login menu and
select Preferences. You
will see the Preferences dialog. Under Category, select Appearance.
Your dialog will appear as in Figure below.
You
will need to do three things. First, you must set the font for
your friend’s message. Second you must set the font for your
message. Third, you must tell Yahoo Messenger to use your setting
rather than your friend’s.
To set the font for your friend’s messages, click on the button
next to Text Font. You will see the familiar font selection
dialog. Pick any Anjal font that starts with “TSCu___”, and set a colour for
this font.
To set the font for your own messages, click on the Fonts and
Colors button under Default colors for composing messages.
Again, select any Anjal font that starts with “TSCu___”.
To tell Yahoo Messenger to use your settings, click to check Always
use my fonts and colors, overriding my friends.
That is all there is to it. You can now chat with your friends in
Tamil. Type your Tamil messages the same way you type Tamil
anywhere else with Anjal – using the F12 key.
A sample Tamil chat session on Yahoo is shown below:

| Tamil in MSN Messenger |
|
MSN Messenger does not allow you to set the font for your friend’s
messages. As such, you should have the same font that your friend is
using. If your friend has Anjal2000-Pro as well, you and your friend
can choose any of the Anjal fonts that start with “TSCu___”.
Start a chat session with your friend. To set the font for your messages,
click on the Edit menu and select Set My Message Font.
Ask your friend to do the same. You
may just guide him over the chat session. You can both chat in
Tamil.Again, using the
F12 key to switch between English and Tamil.
Since all of them will
be using Anjal2000-Pro anyway, you may pick any of the following
fonts:
TSCu_InaiMathi,
TSCu_ArulMathi,
TSCu_InaiKathir,
TSCu_Sudar,
TSCu_Amuthu or
TSCu_Mullai.
Users
with Font Pack 1 will have more fonts than these. However, the list
here is the safest as all Anjal2000-Pro uses will have them in their
system.

in Chat Rooms |
When
you are in a chat room (either Yahoo or MSN), it is desirable to
display the messages of each member in the room in a different font
or colour. In these situations, you may not want to override the
font settings of your friends. It is best that the members in the
room only pick the fonts that are available to all.
|
| The
+Murasu Menu |
You may
have noticed in the screen shots that both Yahoo and MSN messenger
have the "+Murasu" menu. This is a feature of Anjal2000-SE.
You can use this menu to access all of Anjal features like check
encoding, email a selected portion of text, switching keyboards,
inserting frequently used lines of text and other tasks.
